Gary Shell Cross-City Trail: Completed Sections |
|
The Gary Shell Cross-City Trail will eventually stretch from the James E.L. Wade Park to the Heide-Trask Drawbridge.

Constructed portions include the following:
- 10'-wide multi-use path from John D. Barry Drive to Halyburton Memorial Park and from the park to the Cameron Art Museum. This section of the trail was funded with $350,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for construction. Design and permitting were funded by the City of Wilmington.
- 10'-wide multi-use path along the east side of Independence Boulevard from Museum Drive to the Barclay Commons Development. This section of trail was funded with $215,000 by the City of Wilmington.
- 10'-wide multi-use path from Randall Parkway to Converse Road. This section of the trail was funded with $1,650,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for construction. Design and permitting were funded by the City of Wilmington.
- 10'-wide multi-use path from South College Road at Randall Parkway to Mallard Street at Hooker Road. This section of the trail was funded with $1,500,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for construction. Design and permitting were funded by the City of Wilmington.
- On-road bicycle lanes and a sidewalk along Mallard Street and Rill Road between Hooker Road and Teal Street. This section of the trail was funded with $500,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for construction. Design and permitting were funded by the City of Wilmington.
- 10'-wide multi-use path along the south side of Eastwood Road from Racine Drive to Military Cutoff Road. This section of the trail was funded with $435,000 by NCDOT.
- 8'-wide sidewalk along the north side of Eastwood Road from Military Cutoff Road to Canal Street. This section of the trail was built as part of the Landfall Development with $86,600.
- 170 feet of bridge and boardwalk from the end of Teal Street in College Acres to Autumn Hall.
- Installation of a crosswalk and pedestrian countdown signals at the Eastwood Road and Rogersville Road intersection with a 8'-wide multi-use path along the north side of Eastwood Road to Town Center Drive. Completion is expected March 2012.

Cross-City Trail: Future Sections |
|
The Gary Shell Cross-City Trail will eventually stretch from the James E.L. Wade Park to the Heide-Trask Drawbridge.
The following portions of the trail are currently unconstructed but in design:
- Installation of crosswalks and pedestrian countdown signals at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Shipyard Boulevard with a 10' multi-use path along the east side of Independence Boulevard from the Barclay Commons Development to the intersection.
- 10'-wide multi-use path through the Autumn Hall Development from the end of Teal Street to Eastwood Road.

- North 23rd Street between Belvedere Drive and Market Street
- Oleander Drive between Dawson Street and Mimosa Place

This project will reconstruct North 3rd Street between Market Street and Davis Street. The project could include black decorative mast-arm traffic signals, underground utilities, pedestrian safety improvements, a landscaped median, street trees, and other aesthetic improvements. This project will install improvements including bulbouts, crosswalks, plaza enhancements, and roadway improvements on 17th Street between Wrightsville Avenue and Grace Street.

| Randall Parkway Widening |
Construction FY2013 |
This project will widen Randall Parkway between Independence Boulevard and North College Road. The widened roadway will include four travel lanes, bicycle lanes, a landscaped median and a 10'-wide multi-use path between Independence Boulevard and South Kerr Avenue. This path will be part of the planned Cross-City Trail. Sidewalks will be installed where possible. | Safe Routes to School: Engineering Projects |

These engineering projects will use a combination of city and state funds to complete pedestrian and bicycle safety projects in the vicinity of elementary and middle schools throughout the region. Future projects will be derived from the Safe Routes to School Planning Program.
Projects:
- Construct a walkway between Kingston Road and Bradley Creek Elementary School (completed FY2009)
- Construct a sidewalk along Greenhowe Drive between Bragg Drive and Kirby Smith Drive (completed FY2009)
- Install paved shoulders along Kirby Smith Drive between Greenhowe Drive and Holly Tree Elementary School (completed FY2009)
- Construct a 1200'-long sidewalk along Saint Nicholas Road and Blair Elementary School (completed FY2009)
- Construct a walkway between Spartan Road and Windemere Road (completed FY2010)
- Construct a 3100'-long sidewalk along the west side of Greenville Loop Road between Greenville Village mobile home community and Bradley Creek Elementary School (construction FY2013)
- Install a sidewalk along Lorraine Drive between Mary C. Williams Elementary School and the Riverlights development (completed FY2010)
- Install pedestrian crossing at Independence Boulevard and Park Avenue (completed FY2013)
